We recommend a stretch located west of M40 running to the Michigan Lakeshore, the lower section from below Lake Allegan to Hacklander Boat Landing is designated as natural river and offers some very nice paddling with relaxing views of wildlife. Travel along the Swan Lake Area Refuge (Restricted Area) and Ottawa Marsh, accessible outside of Fennville.
We have multiple day trips available in this section of the river featuring enjoyable recreational paddling for family outings and group events. These trips range from approximately 2-6 hours.

As you descend down river into the valley created by the Kalamazoo River you will find yourself in New Richmond, this historic river flats town once a busy lumber mill is now a quiet riverbend hamlet . This little village was created when the Chicago and West Michigan Railroad line came through and was chosen as a station because of its easy access by river from Saugatuck. The track is still active today! The Swing Bridge built in 1879, is the oldest remaining swing bridge of its kind in the United States and is on the National Register of Historic Bridges. It was completely restored in 2004 and is now open to pedestrian traffic only. It is the noble centerpiece of New Richmond Bridge County Park.
